Our modest version of Winter and slightly damp Spring will yield an abundant fuel supply for the coming fire season. You may not clean out your closets or garage this Spring but make the defense of your property a priority for weekend chores in the weeks ahead.
Cal Fire offers a great video summary of the steps every rural homeowner should take to prepare for wildfire season. It's short and includes powerful examples of how your proactive steps could save your home this summer.
Here are some tips for protecting your home and family in the fire season ahead.
- Remember that your defensible space is a 30 foot "fuel-free" zone around your home. Remove firewood, brush, needles and tall grass from this zone.
- Make a list of the things you would absolutely want to take with you in the event you need to evacuate your property. Take a picture of the list with your smart phone so you'll keep it handy.
- Plan your evacuation routes and destinations so you can know where you are going when it's time to leave in a hurry.
- Keep all combustible materials away from your propane tanks. Remember to shut the tanks off before you evacuate your home.
